Jane Eyre

I’m learning a lot from her. I’m a slow reader and the book reads very slowly as well, so I’m going at a snail’s pace but Miss C. B. keeps surprising me. I’m enjoying this a hell of a lot more than her sister’s Wuthering Heights. I always thought W.H. was a lot like Pinocchio in that it is a tale of someone who seems to almost wilfully put himself/herself into harms way over and over. Ever since I was very little I’ve found that nearly unbearable and and I will stop reading or watching such a story. This is where J.E. keeps surprising me, there seems to be a little more balance to the character. I’m enjoying it and it is even giving me some insights.

Belated Happy New Year!

(and if you want to see the worm, click ‘zoom’ but you have to be attentive because you can only see him once - he’s shy, and smart.)

This is a Dutch show of which I missed the first season and it is the first time since forever that I’m actually looking forward to another episode of a (Dutch) series.

The concept is pretty simple: The Netherlands has a flourishing hip-hop scene (too) and each episode consists of a young rapper who meets an old Dutch singer who has had at least one really big hit. They talk, they listen to each other’s music and then they each have a week to do a remake of the other’s big hit in their own style.

It’s very entertaining, funny, touching and educational.

Lovely word

My pupil was a lively child, who had been spoilt and indulged, and therefore was sometimes wayward; but as she was committed entirely to my care, and no injudicious interference from any quarter ever thwarted my plans for her improvement, she soon forgot her little freaks, and became obedient and teachable.

- The emphasis is mine, I’m enjoying this use of the word freak.

Ten kilos of Dutch cheese circles the earth

Several pieces of Old Amsterdam cheese are currently circling the earth, waiting for Dutch astronaut Andre Kuipers to arrive at the ISS space station in around a month’s time, the Parool reports.

Kuipers apparently asked the Westland company to supply the cheese back in April. In addition to regulation food, astronauts are allowed to take limited supplies of their own choice.

Henriette Westland told the paper Kuipers had taken cheese in space before but because this is a longer trip - six months - he wanted to ensure a proper supply.
